For a painterly effect, shadows may include the complement of the color casting the shadow, particularly in strong light. Use of complementary colors can provide remarkable, shimmering luminosity, especially when working with intense ambient light. Alternatively, random “jewels” of dropped-in color will enliven both sunlit and shadowed areas.
