Pastels are a different type of medium as they are the medium halfway between paints and pencils. They are essentially a very thick stick made mostly out of pigment and some binder that will allow the pigment to keep its shape and make it possible to handle it like a pencil and draw with it.

Keep in mind that Monet used watercolors, pastels, and oils, so some of these results might not be achievable with only watercolors. Whenever you are setting out to copy a great painting, do research as to the type of medium the original artist used. Trying to reproduce an oil painting with watercolors may lead to disappointment as these two mediums behave and dry very differently

A lot of pigments are solids. They are finely ground, yet the particles sometimes remain particles even after being treated with water. Therefore, if your paint stain is dry, it’s always best to treat it with some kind of a gentle brush. That way you can break away the solid paint particles before wetting the stain again.
